Viewers Claim Netflix Failed to Deliver Seamless Streaming Experience

Netflix is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the streaming giant failed to deliver on its promise of a seamless viewing experience during the highly anticipated boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.

The lawsuit, filed by Ronald "Blue" Denton in Florida state court, claims that Netflix's "streaming glitches" and "buffering issues" disrupted the viewing experience for many subscribers who paid to watch the fight.

Netflix Subscriber Alleges Streaming Glitches Disrupted Tyson-Paul Fight

Denton, who filed the class action lawsuit on behalf of himself and other affected viewers, alleges that Netflix's streaming service experienced widespread technical difficulties during the fight, including buffering, outages, and a complete lack of access for some users. These disruptions, he argues, prevented viewers from enjoying the fight and deprived them of the value they expected from their Netflix subscriptions.

The lawsuit accuses Netflix of breach of contract, alleging that the company failed to fulfill its contractual obligations to provide a working streaming service. It also claims that Netflix engaged in deceptive trade practices by continuing to bill subscribers despite failing to deliver the promised streaming services.

Denton argues that Netflix's technical failures caused viewers to suffer monetary loss due to being charged for services not rendered, as well as "undue inconvenience and frustration."

Netflix Acknowledges Technical Difficulties During Live Stream

Netflix has acknowledged the technical challenges it faced during the live stream of the fight, which was its largest live sports broadcast to date. The company reported 65 million live concurrent streams and 108 million total live viewers for the event worldwide.

Netflix CTO Elizabeth Stone reportedly acknowledged the streaming quality issues in a message to employees, stating that the "unprecedented scale" of the event created technical challenges. While the company worked to stabilize the stream for the majority of viewers, Stone acknowledged that some members had a poor experience and that there was room for improvement.

Despite these challenges, Netflix considered the event a success, citing the high viewership numbers and the launch team's efforts to prioritize the stability of the stream.

Netflix Faces Other Legal Challenges

This lawsuit is not the first time Netflix has faced legal challenges. Last year, the company was hit with a class action lawsuit from shareholders in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California. These shareholders accused Netflix of misleading the market about its subscription growth. The lawsuit stemmed from Netflix projecting it would add about 2.5 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, but instead, the company reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in April.

In the Netflix Tyson-Paul streaming glitches class action lawsuit, Denton seeks unspecified damages, exceeding $5 million, for all viewers in the United States who experienced streaming issues during the Tyson-Paul fight.
