Class Action Claims Widespread System Crashes Disrupted The Bar Exam

Meazure Learning, the company behind the testing software used for the February 2025 California Bar Exam, has been hit with legal action for massive technical failures that left test-takers in distress and jeopardized their legal careers, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit filed against ProctorU which does business as Meazure Learning claims the company’s malfunctioning platform repeatedly crashed, lagged, and failed to provide promised features, preventing many from completing the critical two-day exam.

Filed by three test-takers, the lawsuit argues that Meazure Learning’s proctoring software rendered the high-stakes exam nearly impossible to complete. The plaintiffs, along with thousands of other aspiring lawyers, paid fees to use the platform, only to experience severe disruptions that caused delays, undue stress, and, for some, an inability to finish the test, the lawsuit claims.

Bar Exam Plagued by Software Crashes and Errors

Laura Perjanik, Victoria Tulsidas, and Samuel McClain are the three students behind the lawsuit and they all argue that the software failed them at critical moments. Perjanik, who took the exam remotely, faced immediate issues when she was locked out of the first essay for four hours.

As she struggled with constant crashes, she spent six hours completing a single essay—far longer than the allotted time. Calls to tech support went unanswered or led to a frustrating cycle of being redirected back to online proctors. Overwhelmed, she broke down in tears, realizing she would not be able to complete the test as planned.

Tulsidas, who took the exam at an in-person testing site, encountered different but equally damaging issues. Her exam software lagged and crashed multiple times, forcing her to switch laptops mid-test. The copy-paste function failed, making it harder to reference critical information. On the second day, a platform-wide crash delayed her start by 40 minutes.

McClain faced similar difficulties. On the second day of testing, he couldn’t log in for 40 minutes, and at one point, a system error notified him that none of his multiple-choice answers were being saved—just before the entire program shut down. He also reported being distracted by other test-takers frantically seeking help from proctors as their software malfunctioned.

Meazure Learning Accused of Rushed Rollout and Unpreparedness

The lawsuit alleges that Meazure Learning’s system was unprepared for the thousands of test-takers relying on it. The February 2025 bar exam was the first iteration of a new remote-friendly format, and plaintiffs argue that Meazure rushed to roll out an untested, unreliable platform.

Applicants had already raised concerns in the lead-up to the exam. Many reported errors during required mock exams, conflicting instructions about testing procedures, and last-minute cancellations of testing site reservations.

Despite these red flags, Meazure and the State Bar of California moved forward with the software, offering refunds or fee waivers to retake the exam in July—but only after the exam was already in progress.

The consequences for test-takers were severe. For many, failing to complete the February exam means months of additional preparation, thousands of dollars in lost income, and delayed careers, the lawsuit claims.

Companies Face Legal Action for Letting Consumers Down

Like in the Meazure lawsuit, a number of other companies have recently been hit with legal action for breaking their promises by allegedly breaching warranties and unjustly enriching themselves.

Some examples of lawsuits filed over the past few weeks include Apple allegedly misleading consumers by falsely marketing certain Apple Watches as "carbon neutral," leading them into buying products under false pretenses.

Amazon also faces a similar lawsuit, with allegations of misleading consumers through environmental branding on Amazon Basics Paper Products. A lawsuit claims the company promotes these items as eco-friendly while sourcing materials from suppliers engaged in harmful logging practices.

Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble and its partner, SPD Swiss Precision Diagnostics, are accused of falsely marketing their Clearblue Menopause Stage Indicator test as a reliable tool for determining a woman’s menopause stage, a new lawsuit alleges.

In their lawsuit against ProctorU, the students want to represent anyone in the US who used the Meazure Exam Platform to take the February 2025 California Bar Examination. They are seeking damages, injunctive relief, interest, fees, and costs.
