Florida Woman Sues iFit Over Defective NordicTrack Treadmill and Injuries

A Florida woman is suing iFit Health and Fitness after a series of malfunctions with her $2,600 NordicTrack Commercial Treadmill culminated in a severe injury.

Plaintiff Alla Hibbs purchased the NordicTrack treadmill in April 2020, along with a warranty and a four-year maintenance plan, but claims her experience with the equipment was nothing short of a nightmare, Legal Newsline reports.

From the start, the treadmill was problematic. For the first six months, it was completely inoperable. iFit eventually sent a replacement console, but without installation support, forcing Hibbs to rely on her boyfriend, a mechanic, to get the machine running. Even then, the treadmill developed a new, dangerous issue: it would abruptly stop at speeds of 7 or above.

Despite numerous calls for service and a technician visit in May 2023, the treadmill's problem persisted. The technician, Jeffrey Lee Boyer, who is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, identified a wiring issue but failed to return with the necessary part, despite Hibbs' pleas.

iFit Refuses to Repair Treadmill Unless Owner Waives Liability for Injuries

In June 2023, a treadmill malfunction led to a devastating accident for Hibbs. While running at speed 7, the NordicTrack treadmill abruptly stopped and restarted, throwing her off and causing extensive injuries.

"She was standing on the belt when all of a sudden, it started moving at the prior speed level of 7. This defect caused Ms. Hibbs' legs to be knocked out from under her, her feet hit the wall behind her, and her face and upper body came crashing onto the moving belt," the lawsuit states.

Hibbs suffered a swollen and bruised face, lacerations and bruises on her arms and legs, injuries to her teeth, neck, back, and knees, and a shoulder injury diagnosed as impingement syndrome. The impingement syndrome significantly limited her range of motion and required a cortisone injection for her to continue her work as a hairdresser.

The aftermath of her treadmill injuries brought further distress. Hibbs contacted iFit for repairs, but they offered to fix the treadmill only if she agreed to release them from all liability for her injuries. Hibbs refused, and the treadmill remained unrepaired until it fully broke down in January 2024.

“As a direct and proximate cause of the Defendants’ negligence and other misconduct, Plaintiff sustained serious and permanent injuries, physical pain, mental anguish, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and disability and disfigurement, has incurred and will continue to incur in the future medical expenses in the care and treatment of her injuries, has sustained loss of earnings in the past and will sustain loss of earning and/or earning capacity in the future,” the lawsuit asserts.

Lawsuit Claims iFit Knew About Treadmill Defect, Ignored Consumer Safety

Hibbs' lawsuit accuses iFit, Universal Technical Services (UTS), and Boyer of negligence for failing to address the known defect despite numerous service calls. The lawsuit further alleges that iFit engaged in deceptive practices by failing to honor its warranty and maintenance plan obligations, and by attempting to coerce Hibbs into waiving her right to legal recourse.

Hibbs' case is not an isolated incident, according to the lawsuit. Numerous other consumers have reported similar issues with their NordicTrack treadmills, suggesting a widespread problem and a pattern of neglectful customer service on the part of iFit.

In her IFit treadmill personal injury lawsuit, Hibbs seeks compensation for her injuries, medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages, aiming to hold iFit accountable for their alleged negligence and deceptive practices.
