Case Overview: A class action lawsuit claims Nuna's recall of Rava convertible car seats fails to address a safety defect that could endanger children.
Consumers Affected: Parents who purchased Nuna Rava convertible car seats.
Court: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California
Parents who purchased Nuna’s Rava convertible car seats are raising concerns about safety, claiming that a recall issued by the company fails to provide a real fix.
Prashmi Khanna, Fabiola Chapman, Tina Marie Barrales, Tiffany Larry, and Alyna Smith have filed a lawsuit against Nuna Baby Essentials, Inc., alleging that the company knowingly sold defective car seats and is not taking enough steps to correct the problem. They argue that the recall does little to address a harness system issue that could leave children unprotected in the event of a crash.
Nuna markets the Rava as a high-end car seat that grows with a child, advertising it as both rear-facing and forward-facing. A five-point harness system is meant to keep children secured until manually released, ensuring they stay safely restrained throughout travel.
According to the lawsuit, a design flaw allows dirt, crumbs, or other small particles to interfere with the locking mechanism. When this happens, the harness may loosen unexpectedly, leaving children without the protection parents expect from a premium car seat.
On December 20, 2024, Nuna issued a recall after recognizing the problem. The company began notifying customers on January 15, 2025, offering a cleaning kit, a new seat pad, and care instructions.
Parents say that this does not fully address the issue. Instead of replacing the affected car seats or making repairs, Nuna is placing the responsibility on consumers to modify their own products. The lawsuit also claims that some parents have yet to receive a recall notice, meaning they may not even be aware of the issue.
Several plaintiffs say they only learned about the recall through third-party sources rather than from Nuna. Some who contacted the company for guidance were told the modification kits were not yet available. Others say Nuna failed to offer refunds or replacements, even when their car seats were still under warranty.
One parent claims that after reaching out to Nuna, they were simply directed to the recall website, where they could request a new seat pad, headrest, and cleaning supplies. The lawsuit argues that this response is inadequate for a safety issue that could leave children vulnerable in an accident.
Those involved in the lawsuit believe Nuna has not done enough to protect families who purchased the Rava expecting a product built for long-term safety. The recall does not include a full product replacement, and instead of providing parents with refunds or fully repaired car seats, Nuna is asking them to install fixes themselves.
“Plaintiffs and Class Members are forced to either continue using a Product that Nuna admits is unsafe and poses a serious risk of injury to children using the Product—and which Nuna warns should not be used in the interim—or else to purchase a separate car seat to protect their children, thereby incurring further damages as a result of Nuna’s conduct, “ the lawsuit states.
Concerns about child safety have led to multiple lawsuits in recent months. In October, parents sued Mattel and Fisher-Price, claiming that Snuga Swing products posed a suffocation risk. The lawsuit alleges the companies knew about the dangers but failed to warn consumers.
Last May, another case was filed against Nested Bean Inc., challenging the safety of its weighted sleep sacks and swaddles. Parents argue that the company promotes its products as a safer alternative to traditional sleepwear, despite research suggesting they could be dangerous.
In the Nuna car seat recall class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking monetary compensation and a court order requiring Nuna to provide a complete solution. Parents argue that the company should offer full refunds or make proper repairs to ensure children are protected as intended.
