Lawsuit Claims Lax Data Protection

The lawsuit, filed by plaintiff William Buehring, accuses the company of failing to secure customer data during a cyberattack in May 2024. The breach reportedly exposed Social Security numbers, financial account details, and other personally identifiable information.

Buehring contends that H&R Block’s systems were insufficient to protect sensitive data, despite the nature of its services requiring customers to share highly confidential details. The lawsuit alleges that customers placed their trust in the company with the understanding that their personal information would remain protected.

Robinhood also faced backlash last year when a data breach revealed the personal information of millions of users. The lawsuit against the company focuses on its alleged failure to protect customer accounts, despite warnings from cybersecurity experts about vulnerabilities in its platform.

Duke Energy was hit with a lawsuit earlier this year after a data breach compromised sensitive information. Customers allege the company neglected to implement sufficient protections to prevent the unauthorized access that exposed their personal details.

In the H&R Block data breach class action lawsuit, Buehring is seeking to represent a nationwide class of affected individuals, as well as an Illinois-based subclass. Allegations against H&R Block include negligence, unjust enrichment, and breach of implied contract. Additionally, the lawsuit accuses the company of violating the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act.

The lawsuit requests damages for impacted individuals and injunctive relief to address the vulnerabilities that allowed the breach to occur.
