Consumers Claim Ford and Camel Group Sold Vehicles with Defective Batteries

Ford is facing claims it knowingly sold Bronco Sport and Maverick models with defective batteries that are prone to sudden power loss and stalling. A new lawsuit alleges that Ford, along with Chinese battery manufacturer Camel Group, installed faulty 12-volt batteries in 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick models, creating a safety hazard for drivers.

The complaint follows Ford’s recent recall of nearly 273,000 affected vehicles in January 2025, but plaintiffs argue the recall is inadequate and fails to fully resolve the issue.

Ford Bronco Sport and Maverick Batteries Defective, Lawsuit Claims

Edward Benson, a Wisconsin resident and Bronco Sport owner, says his vehicle’s battery failed multiple times, forcing him to replace it after just 34,000 miles. Frustrated with frequent stalling, he eventually disabled the vehicle’s “start/stop” feature to avoid getting stranded in traffic, the lawsuit explains. Benson says he even resorted to carrying a battery booster in case of emergency, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Benson alleges that when he purchased his Bronco Sport, Ford and its dealership never disclosed any known battery defects or recalls. Instead, he learned about the problem through social media and news reports.

Consumers Allege Ford and Camel Group Knew About Battery Defect

According to the lawsuit, Ford and Camel Group were aware—or should have been aware—of the defective batteries well before the recall. The complaint claims the companies concealed the issue while continuing to market the Bronco Sport and Maverick as safe and reliable.

The lawsuit argues that Ford could have disclosed the defect through owner’s manuals, direct communication with customers, or at the point of sale. Instead, the recall—which offers a free battery replacement—does little to address the root cause of the defect, leaving customers with cars that could still experience battery failures.

Beyond safety concerns, plaintiffs say the issue has devalued their vehicles. Even with a replacement battery, they argue that the history of electrical failures makes their cars worth less than similar models without defects.

Other Automakers Face Similar Lawsuits Over Battery Defects

This isn’t the first time Ford has faced legal trouble over vehicle defects. The company previously dealt with a billion-dollar lawsuit over its three-cylinder EcoBoost engine and is now battling another class action case involving its V6 EcoBoost engine, used in the Bronco and other models.

Battery-related lawsuits are also becoming more common across the auto industry. Audi and Volkswagen are currently facing legal action over high-voltage lithium-ion battery defects in Audi e-tron SUVs, while Porsche has been hit with similar claims regarding its Taycan EVs. Separately, Chervon North America is being sued over lithium-ion batteries that allegedly overheat and catch fire.

In the Ford Bronco battery class action lawsuit, Benson wants to represent anyone in the US who owns a 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport or a 2022-2023 Ford Maverick equipped with a 12 volt battery having an internal weld and cast-on-strap that was manufactured by Camel Battery Group.
