Have you ever stared at your Bosch dishwasher's control panel, completely baffled by the cryptic symbols because the lettering has faded away? You're not alone. A new class action lawsuit is taking aim at Bosch, alleging the company's dishwashers suffer from a common defect that renders them frustrating and difficult to use.
The lawsuit, filed by California resident Jeremy Revitch, centers on a critical design flaw in Bosch dishwashers across multiple series, including 100-, 300-, 500-, and 800- models. The complaint alleges these dishwashers are equipped with control panel lettering that fades prematurely, often within a few years of purchase.
According to Revitch's complaint, this fading isn't limited to well-used dishwashers. The lawsuit points out instances where even floor model appliances in showrooms exhibit this defect. With numerous buttons and settings, a Bosch dishwasher becomes unusable or incredibly difficult to operate when the control panel lettering disappears.
The lawsuit further alleges that Bosch was aware of this widespread issue but failed to disclose it to consumers. They argue that the company's one-year warranty on the control panel lettering is inadequate, especially considering the expected lifespan of a dishwasher is generally between 9 and 16 years.
Revitch isn't alone in his frustration. The lawsuit highlights several customer complaints online echoing similar experiences with fading control panel lettering. Many voiced concerns about the limited warranty and Bosch's apparent lack of a solution:
“My Bosch dishwasher control panel lettering is disappearing. This started about 1.5 years ago and now at 3 years old I can barely read the right side of the panel. This will eventually make the dishwasher impossible to use. Bosch only guarantees against this problem for one year. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a remedy for this?”
“We bought a Bosch dishwasher 8 years ago and the same thing happened to our panel after a couple of years. We have been told it was a common problem. We just recently went looking to replace our dishwasher and noticed that the Bosch floor model of a 500 series was already losing its lettering. Can't comprehend how a manufacturer of expensive appliances hasn't fixed this serious defect.”
This isn't the first time Bosch has faced legal action over appliance defects. In April 2024, Bosch agreed to a $2 million class action settlement to resolve claims that certain Bosch ovens and microwaves had faulty control panels prone to fading, dimming, or failing altogether.
Revitch is seeking damages for himself and others affected by this alleged defect. The lawsuit calls for compensation for out-of-pocket expenses, injunctive relief requiring Bosch to address the issue, and potentially forcing the company to offer replacements or repairs for impacted dishwashers.
