TransUnion agreed to pay $23 million to settle claims that it failed to properly investigate disputed “hard inquiries” on credit reports. The lawsuit accuses TransUnion of ignoring Fair Credit Reporting Act requirements by not contacting the companies that requested credit reports, and by continuing to report disputed inquiries.
Around 485,000 people received a “502 Letter” from TransUnion after submitting a written dispute. These consumers are eligible for settlement benefits.
Although TransUnion denies wrongdoing, it will pay affected consumers and revise how it handles these disputes.
No claim form is required to receive a base payment of $20 to $30. Class members who experienced additional harm may qualify for more. Those individuals can file a claim for an enhanced payment up to $160, depending on how many valid claims are submitted.
