A $2.7 million settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit stemming from a chemical spill at the Altuglas plant in Bristol, Pennsylvania, in March 2023. The spill released thousands of gallons of a water-soluble acrylic polymer solution into Otter Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River, prompting concerns about water contamination.
The lawsuit alleged that the chemical spill caused widespread disruption and economic loss for residents and businesses in the affected area. Plaintiffs claimed that the spill necessitated the purchase of bottled water and other precautionary measures, resulting in financial hardship.
Altuglas, a subsidiary of Trinseo, denied any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims and avoid further litigation. The settlement aims to compensate residents and businesses for expenses incurred due to the chemical spill and subsequent water advisories.
Under the terms of the settlement, eligible class members can receive a base payment of $25 to $50 for economic losses. Additional compensation may be available for documented losses, such as the purchase of bottled water or lost business income. To receive a settlement payment, submit a claim form by August 16, 2024.
