FCA US has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit involving certain 2017-2018 Ram trucks that may have been manufactured with defective anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and brake hydraulic control units (HCU).
The lawsuit alleges that certain Ram models were built with braking system components prone to failure, particularly within the ABS and hydraulic control unit. According to the complaint, these defects can result in:
Drivers reportedly paid for expensive repairs out of pocket, lost vehicle use, and experienced reduced vehicle value due to these safety issues.
The plaintiffs argued that FCA knew about the defects but continued to sell and lease affected trucks without warning owners of the potential risks. The impacted models include popular Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, as well as certain Ram chassis cabs, often used in heavy-duty commercial work.
FCA US has not admitted wrongdoing but agreed to settle the case to avoid further litigation.
Class members who paid for repairs related to replacing the brake hydraulic control unit (HCU) may be eligible for full reimbursement of those expenses. FCA will process these under its standard recall reimbursement procedures rather than through a separate claim fund.
Class members who rented vehicles while their trucks were in the shop for brake-related repairs can receive up to $100 per day, with a maximum reimbursement of $1,000 per vehicle. FCA has capped the total available reimbursement for all class members at $600,000 for rental expenses, so individual payments could be reduced if claims exceed this limit.
FCA will also provide a voluntary safety recall (NHTSA Recall No. 24V-896) for all affected trucks. This recall involves installing a new brake hydraulic control unit component, which includes updated pump motor brushes designed to prevent the defect from recurring.
While the rental reimbursement and repair coverage require submitting documentation, participation in the voluntary recall does not require a claim form—owners will be contacted by FCA directly with recall instructions.
