A class action lawsuit against The Salvation Army has been settled for $1.87 million, resolving claims that the organization violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) when obtaining background checks for job applicants.
The FCRA is a federal law that protects the accuracy, fairness, and privacy of consumer information used in background checks. The Salvation Army, a well-known Christian nonprofit organization providing aid to those in need, allegedly failed to comply with this law when conducting background checks on job applicants.
Plaintiff Casedria Parker alleged that The Salvation Army failed to properly disclose and obtain authorization before acquiring consumer reports for background checks on prospective, current, and former employees. Additionally, the lawsuit claimed that the organization did not provide the required Summary of Rights under the FCRA to these individuals.
The Salvation Army denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement. Individuals who applied for a job with The Salvation Army and underwent a background check between November 2, 2018, and May 17, 2021, are eligible for compensation.
Under the settlement terms, affected individuals can receive a $95 voucher or coupon to use at a Salvation Army store located in specific states, including California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, or Arizona.
