Star Tribune Media Co. has agreed to a $2.9 million class action settlement to resolve claims that it shared subscribers' video-watching data with Facebook without permission, breaking the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).
Plaintiffs say Star Tribune illegally gave Facebook details about what its digital subscribers watched on the website by using a Meta Pixel tracker. This action allegedly violated the VPPA, which protects people's privacy when it comes to their video-viewing habits.
Star Tribune denies any wrongdoing, but agreed to set up a $2.9 million settlement fund to deal with the claims. People who are part of the settlement can submit a claim form to get a share of the settlement money. How much they get will depend on how many valid claims are submitted.
As part of the settlement, Star Tribune has to stop using the Facebook Tracking Pixel on web pages with video content and identifiable URLs until the VPPA changes or until it gets permission to share video content with Facebook in a way that follows the law.
