Health care technology company Nuance Communications has agreed to pay $8.5 million to settle claims that it failed to protect consumer data during the widespread MOVEit cyberattack in 2023.
The breach affected millions of people whose information was stored by companies using the popular file transfer software.
Nuance provides technology solutions to health care organizations, including clinical documentation tools, AI-powered medical imaging and ambient listening technology that helps physicians create patient records.
The company relies on third-party software like MOVEit to transfer sensitive files between systems.
In late May 2023, hackers exploited a vulnerability in MOVEit's software and accessed data stored by numerous organizations worldwide. Nuance was among the companies affected.
By September 2023, the company began notifying individuals that their personal information may have been compromised during the five-day window when attackers had access to the system.
The lawsuit accused Nuance of failing to implement adequate security measures to protect the data it handled. Plaintiffs also claimed the company waited too long to notify affected individuals, leaving them exposed to potential identity theft and fraud for months before they learned their information had been compromised.
Nuance has denied these allegations and has not admitted any wrongdoing. The company agreed to the settlement to resolve the litigation.
The settlement offers multiple compensation options depending on whether you experienced financial harm from the breach.
Those who incurred expenses can claim reimbursement in two categories. Ordinary losses—including bank fees, credit report costs, phone charges and up to four hours of personal time at $25 per hour—are covered up to $2,500.
Extraordinary losses, such as unreimbursed fraudulent charges or documented identity theft damages, can be reimbursed up to $10,000.
Combined, eligible class members could recover as much as $12,500.
If you didn't suffer any direct financial losses or prefer not to document your expenses, you can instead claim a flat cash payment of $100. This amount may be adjusted up or down based on how many people file claims.
Every class member who submits a valid claim also qualifies for two years of complimentary credit monitoring, medical data monitoring and identity theft protection services, a particularly relevant benefit given that Nuance handles health care information.
The deadline to file a claim is Dec. 24, 2025. A final approval hearing is scheduled for March 31, 2026.
