Newcourse Communications Data Breach Settlement: $600K

The settlement applies to two categories of individuals:

• Group 1: This group includes individuals whose Social Security numbers were directly compromised in the data breach. They must have also received a mailed notification from Newcourse in October 2022 informing them of the breach.
  
  
• Group 2: This group encompasses individuals who received a mailed data breach notification in October 2022, even though their Social Security numbers were not directly exposed. However, they believe their information was misused due to the breach and they suffered damages as a result.

To claim reimbursement for identity theft losses or out-of-pocket expenses you may have incurred as a result of the Newcourse data breach, you will need documented proof of the financial losses you suffered, such as account statements, travel receipts, invoices, credit reports, and any other documents that prove your data breach-related expenses.

A data breach lawsuit filed against Newcourse Communications, a provider of data processing and printing services, has been settled for $600,000. The class action lawsuit alleged that Newcourse failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures, resulting in a data breach between April 27, 2022, and May 3, 2022. This breach compromised sensitive consumer information, specifically Social Security numbers.

The lawsuit further claimed that Newcourse was negligent in informing affected consumers. Plaintiffs allege they were not notified until October 2022, a delay that could have hindered their ability to protect themselves from potential identity theft.

Under the terms of the Newcourse data breach class action settlement, eligible class members will receive:

• Free Identity Theft Monitoring: All eligible class members can receive two years of identity theft monitoring services. This service includes monitoring for all three major credit bureaus and provides $1 million in identity theft insurance coverage.
  
  
• Reimbursement for Expenses: Documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach can be reimbursed up to $500. This may include bank fees incurred due to fraudulent activity, travel costs associated with resolving the issue, credit report monitoring fees, and lost time (compensated at $20 per hour for up to five hours).
  
  
• Reimbursement for Identity Theft Losses: Those who can document financial losses due to confirmed identity theft as a direct result of the data breach can claim up to $4,000 in reimbursement.
  

It's important to note that while Newcourse denies any wrongdoing, they agreed to the settlement to avoid the costs and uncertainties of litigation. By participating in the settlement, you are giving up your right to sue Newcourse Communications for any claims related to the data breach.
