Landmark Admin and six insurance companies have agreed to pay $6 million to settle a lawsuit over a data breach that exposed sensitive customer information in the spring of 2024.
The settlement covers policyholders whose data was handled by the third-party administrator and may have been accessed during the cyberattack.
Landmark Admin provides backend services for insurance carriers and retirement plan administrators, managing policyholder records and processing claims on behalf of its clients.
The companies affected by this breach include American Benefit Life Insurance Company, American Monumental Life Insurance Company, Capitol Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company and Accendo Insurance Company.
Between May 13 and June 17, 2024, unauthorized parties gained access to Landmark's systems. The breach compromised a range of sensitive data, including names, Social Security numbers, financial account details and health insurance information.
For insurance customers, this type of data exposure creates serious risks of identity theft, fraudulent claims and financial harm.
The lawsuit alleged that Landmark and the insurance companies failed to implement reasonable security measures to protect the information entrusted to them. Plaintiffs argued that standard cybersecurity practices could have prevented the intrusion or at least limited the damage.
Landmark Admin has denied these allegations and has not admitted any fault. The company and its insurance partners agreed to the settlement to resolve the matter without further litigation.
Affected individuals have two options for compensation, depending on whether they suffered direct financial harm from the breach.
Those who experienced out-of-pocket losses tied to fraud or identity theft can seek reimbursement of up to $2,500. To qualify for this tier, you'll need to provide documentation connecting your losses to the breach—bank statements showing fraudulent charges, credit reports reflecting unauthorized accounts or police reports filed after discovering identity theft would all serve as supporting evidence.
Class members who didn't suffer documented financial losses can still receive a flat payment of $30. This amount may be reduced proportionally if a large number of claims are filed, but it provides some compensation for the inconvenience and risk created by having your personal information exposed.
The deadline to file a claim is Dec. 26, 2025. A final approval hearing is scheduled for Jan. 29, 2026.
