FloridaCentral Credit Union has reached a class action settlement to resolve allegations that it failed to safeguard sensitive member information during a May 2024 data breach. The breach reportedly stemmed from unauthorized access to the credit union’s email system and may have exposed members’ personal data, including Social Security numbers and financial account details.
Plaintiffs argue that the breach could have been prevented had FloridaCentral implemented stronger data security practices. The lawsuit claims members were left vulnerable to fraud, identity theft, and financial harm as a result of the unauthorized access.
FloridaCentral Credit Union is based in Florida and serves more than 200,000 members. While the credit union denies any liability, it agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid the uncertainty and expense of continued litigation.
Class members can receive a flat payment of approximately $100 or claim up to $5,000 in reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses linked to the breach. Eligible expenses include unauthorized charges, professional fees, credit monitoring costs, or costs associated with restoring identity or freezing credit.
In addition to financial reimbursement, all class members are eligible for three years of free credit monitoring services. These services include single-bureau monitoring, dark web surveillance, $1 million in identity theft insurance, and access to identity recovery professionals.
This settlement reflects ongoing efforts to hold institutions accountable when private information is compromised due to cybersecurity lapses.
