AutoZone has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that it unlawfully tracked user activity on its website without properly obtaining consent. The retailer will offer eligible consumers a $20 cash payment as part of the settlement agreement.
The lawsuit, filed under Pennsylvania’s Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance Control Act (WESCA), centers around AutoZone’s use of session replay technology—a tool that captures mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes and other user activity on websites.
According to the plaintiff, AutoZone used this software to monitor consumers without their knowledge, which allegedly violated state privacy laws.
Session replay tools are often used by businesses for website optimization or analytics, but the lawsuit claims that tracking such detailed behavior without informing users constitutes a form of illegal wiretapping under Pennsylvania law.
AutoZone, a major auto parts retailer with thousands of locations across the U.S., denies any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve the matter through a settlement. The company’s decision to settle avoids a prolonged legal battle and provides direct compensation to affected consumers.
Eligible class members who submit a valid claim form will receive a $20 cash payment. The payment is available to Pennsylvania residents who placed an order on AutoZone’s website during the class period while session replay technology was active and who were not AutoZone Rewards members at the time.
