Webster University has agreed to a $250,000 settlement to resolve allegations that it failed to provide adequate reimbursements to full-time in-person students for fees and unused meal plan balances during the 2020 Spring Semester.
The lawsuit claims that following the transition to online-only instruction due to COVID-19, students did not receive the full benefits associated with fees they paid, including Student Activity Fees, Housing Activity Fees, and Parking Fees. Additionally, certain students with unused Meal Plan balances were allegedly not appropriately reimbursed.
Webster denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.
The settlement fund will be divided as follows:
Fee Class Fund: $168,500
Meal Plan Class Fund: $81,500
Reductions:
The settlement funds will be reduced to cover litigation costs, settlement administration fees, a service award to the class representative, and attorneys’ fees (up to one-third of the fund).
Distribution:
The remaining amounts (Net Fee Class Fund and Net Meal Plan Class Fund) will be distributed proportionally to eligible Fee Class and Meal Plan Class members.
Payment Timing:
The exact payment amounts and distribution timeline will be determined after all reductions and approvals are finalized.
