Tinder has agreed to a $60.5 million class action settlement to resolve claims that it charged older users significantly more than younger users for Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold subscription plans. According to the lawsuit, Tinder's age-based pricing structure violated California's Unruh Civil Rights Act and the state's Unfair Competition Law by imposing higher subscription fees on users based solely on their age. The case is known as Candelore v. Tinder, Inc., Case No. BC583162, and was filed in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles.
The plaintiff in the case alleged that Tinder's tiered pricing discriminated against older subscribers by making them pay more for the same premium features available to younger users at a lower cost. Tinder has not admitted any wrongdoing in connection with the settlement. The company agreed to the $60.5 million resolution to avoid the continued cost and uncertainty of litigation.
Under the terms of the settlement, eligible class members who purchased Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold subscriptions in California and were charged a higher price due to their age may be entitled to a cash payment. The amount each class member receives will vary based on how much they paid for their subscriptions during the covered period.
You may be eligible to participate in this settlement if you meet all of the following criteria:
If you received a class member notification, you are likely already identified as a potential class member. If you did not receive a notice, you may still qualify and can submit your information for verification.
According to the settlement terms, individual payment amounts will vary and are not set at a fixed dollar figure. Class members who paid more in total Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold subscription fees during the covered period will generally receive a larger share of the $60.5 million settlement fund. The more you paid, the greater your potential recovery — meaning your payout is proportional to your documented subscription spending.
Class members who did not receive a class notice and need to verify their membership must provide supporting documentation estimating their total amount paid to Tinder for Plus or Gold subscriptions. This documentation will be used to calculate your share of the settlement. No minimum or maximum individual award amount has been publicly disclosed; exact payouts will be determined after all valid claims are submitted and reviewed.
