Meal kit company HelloFresh has agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle a lawsuit claiming it signed customers up for recurring subscriptions without making the terms clear.
The case focused on California's consumer protection laws governing automatic renewals and recurring billing practices.
HelloFresh delivers pre-portioned ingredients and recipes to customers' doorsteps, allowing them to cook meals at home without shopping for individual items. Like many subscription services, the company uses an automatic renewal model where customers are billed on a recurring basis unless they actively cancel.
The lawsuit alleged that HelloFresh didn't do enough to inform customers that they were agreeing to ongoing charges when they signed up.
According to the complaint, many consumers believed they were making a one-time purchase or trying out the service, only to discover unexpected charges on their credit cards when the next shipment was processed.
California's Automatic Renewal Law requires companies to clearly disclose subscription terms before charging customers and to obtain their explicit consent to recurring billing.
The plaintiffs argued that HelloFresh's sign-up process fell short of these requirements, leaving customers confused about what they had agreed to.
HelloFresh has denied the allegations and has not admitted any wrongdoing. The company agreed to the settlement to resolve the dispute without further litigation.
This settlement is limited to California residents who had a specific experience with HelloFresh's subscription service.
To qualify, you must have been enrolled in an automatic renewal subscription sometime between January 2019 and August 2025.
Beyond that, you need to meet three additional criteria:
Eligible class members can receive a refund for all amounts they paid to HelloFresh before Aug. 18, 2025. The final payment amounts may be adjusted proportionally depending on the total number of claims filed and administrative costs.
If you already received a full refund from HelloFresh for your charges before Aug. 14, 2025, you're not eligible for additional compensation through this settlement.
Claims must be submitted by Dec. 17, 2025 to be considered for payment.
