Home Depot has agreed to a class action settlement that requires it to improve checkout terminal accessibility for blind and visually impaired customers.
The lawsuit alleged that Home Depot’s point-of-sale terminals failed to provide audio instructions or prompts for the cash-back option at checkout, thereby denying visually impaired shoppers full and equal use of the terminals. The plaintiff claimed this violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Home Depot has not admitted to any wrongdoing but will implement specific accessibility upgrades as part of the settlement.
While no monetary compensation will be distributed to class members, Home Depot has agreed to non-monetary relief under the terms of the settlement:
At least one payment terminal in each store will be updated or replaced to provide audio readouts of on-screen prompts, including instructions for accessing the cash-back feature.
Store managers will receive training on how to use and support the updated terminal technology.
The company will also pay $65,000 in attorney fees and litigation costs, including a $1,000 incentive award to the named plaintiff.
No claim form is required. However, class members can update their contact information through the settlement website.
This settlement addresses a systemic accessibility issue and provides long-term improvements for visually impaired customers shopping at Home Depot locations nationwide.
