Shimano North America Bicycle and Shimano North America Holding have agreed to resolve claims that certain cranksets sold before July 2019 were defective and prone to dangerous delamination or separation from bicycles. Affected components include multiple models from Shimano’s Ultegra and Dura-Ace lines.
The class action lawsuit alleged that Shimano knew about the safety defect but continued to market and sell the cranksets without disclosing the risks. Plaintiffs claim the defect can cause riders to lose control and suffer serious injuries.
In 2023, Shimano announced a voluntary recall of the affected cranksets. The recall and subsequent class action settlement aim to resolve these consumer safety concerns. Shimano denies any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to put the matter to rest.
Eligible class members may qualify for the following:
Extended Warranty: Shimano will extend the express warranty for affected cranksets through July 29, 2027, but only for issues related to bonding separation or delamination.
Enhanced Inspections: Shimano agreed to upgrade its inspection program by providing enhanced inspection tools (e.g., magnifying devices and lighting) and more detailed guidance to participating retailers.
Reimbursement for Replacements: Class members who replaced a crankset due to delamination or separation may receive reimbursement for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses related to purchasing and installing a new crankset.
