General Motors has agreed to pay $150 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming it sold certain Chevrolet and GMC vehicles with defective LC9 engines that burn excessive amounts of oil. The lawsuit alleges that the defect leads to increased maintenance costs, engine damage, and costly repairs.
According to the plaintiffs, GM knew about the oil consumption defect but failed to notify consumers. The affected vehicles allegedly consume oil at an abnormally high rate because of faulty piston rings and engine design flaws. Drivers report frequent low-oil warnings, engine misfires, and in some cases, total engine failure.
GM denies any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the litigation and avoid the expense of further proceedings.
Each qualifying owner or lessee will receive a cash payment from the $150 million settlement fund. According to settlement estimates, each payout is expected to be at least $2,149, though the final amount could be higher or lower depending on the total number of claims submitted.
The settlement provides relief for owners and lessees who may have spent significant time and money addressing the alleged oil consumption defect.
North Carolina residents must return their identification form by August 8, 2025, to claim their payment.
California and Idaho residents will automatically receive settlement payments if they qualify—no claim form is required unless contacted.
This settlement resolves claims related to GM’s alleged failure to disclose engine defects and offers direct compensation to affected vehicle owners in three states.
