A class action lawsuit alleged that Visa and Mastercard violated federal and state antitrust laws by prohibiting independent ATM operators from charging different access fees based on which payment network processed the transaction. As a result of these alleged practices, consumers were purportedly forced to pay higher ATM access fees than they otherwise would have. Without admitting any wrongdoing, Visa and Mastercard have agreed to pay a combined $167.5 million — Visa contributing $88,775,000 and Mastercard contributing $78,725,000 — to resolve these allegations. Eligible claimants may receive a proportional share of the net settlement fund based on the number of qualifying surcharged ATM transactions they submit with their claim. Exact payment amounts are not yet available and will vary depending on the total number of valid claims filed. There is no guaranteed payout amount.
