If you paid for services through one of BetterHelp's websites between Aug. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2020, you could be eligible for a refund as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). BetterHelp, an online therapy service, allegedly shared user information with companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Criteo without adequately safeguarding user privacy.
Under the terms of the settlement, BetterHelp has agreed to pay $7.8 million to resolve the FTC lawsuit. Eligible consumers can receive a refund based on the amount they paid for BetterHelp services during the specified period. BetterHelp has not admitted any wrongdoing, but it has agreed to the settlement terms.
To receive your refund, you don't need to take any action if you're content with receiving a PayPal payment to the email address where you received the FTC settlement notice. However, if you prefer a different payment method like Zelle or a check in the mail, you can use the online form provided. The deadline to select your preferred payment method is June 10, 2024.
It's important to note that there is no exclusion or objection deadline for this settlement. Payments are expected to be sent later in the summer, and eligibility includes individuals who signed up and paid for services through any of BetterHelp's websites mentioned in the refund program between Aug. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2020.
