The trauma of human trafficking leaves deep emotional and financial scars. For years, Backpage.com operated as one of the largest online platforms enabling sex trafficking, including the exploitation of minors and vulnerable adults. The federal government has now created a fund using seized assets from Backpage.com and its operators to compensate those who were harmed.
In December 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a victim remission process funded by more than $200 million in forfeited assets. These funds will be distributed to people who were trafficked through Backpage.com and can demonstrate harm or financial loss.
If you or a loved one were trafficked through this platform, you may qualify for this historic settlement. File a Free Claim Review Now.
From 2004 to 2018, Backpage.com operated under the guise of a classified ad website, similar to Craigslist. However, federal investigations found that the company served as a hub for illegal sex ads. These included listings for adult services, escort services, and even underage victims.
Despite warnings and mounting evidence, the site’s operators actively concealed illegal activity by editing listings and deleting keywords that could trigger law enforcement interest. Executives made hundreds of millions of dollars while countless victims were trafficked across the United States.
After years of public outcry, criminal investigations, and federal seizures, Backpage.com was finally shut down in April 2018. Multiple executives were convicted on charges of money laundering and facilitating prostitution. The government has now set aside seized funds to help those who were hurt.
